“Muslim, Christian, Sikh Faith Leaders Speak in Support of DACA Recipients” by Leilani Leach

I chose to analyse the article “Muslim, Christian, Sikh Faith Leaders Speak in Support of DACA Recipients” by Leilani Leach in reference to our reading of “Writing News for the Web.” The story was published as a response to President Trump’s decision to end DACA. Despite being published on October 11, the contents are mostly referencing an event that occurred in September of this year, rather than new events. One of the first eye-catching ploys is the use of a large picture of a church that is very obviously filled with people of different beliefs or nationalities, in reference to their appearance and dress; similar pictures are planted throughout the article. While the story is not excessively long, it is written as more of a persuasive/ descriptive article about the speeches at the September 24 No Human Being is Illegal meeting and how DACA affects innocent lives rather than a quick, informal article on the subject. Information is easy to get as each paragraph has a simple idea being presented. The article also provides embedded links to all events and programs mentioned, giving the reader easy access. Towards the end of the article there is a numerical list of ways to take action in support of DACA, as well as a way for readers to respond to the article.

Overall I believe the article was engaging and well rounded. If I were to make suggestions, it would be to add subheadings between the transition of background information and the speech information, as well as possibly find a way to separate the various speeches, even if only by a visible line. I think this would make it easier to see where one opinion ends and another begins, due to the lack of easy transitions between these various accounts.
